Job Description
Join the University of New Brunswick’s esteemed Biology Department as an Ornithology & Bird Banding Intern. This unique internship offers hands-on experience in avian research, field techniques, and data collection. You will work closely with experienced ornithologists and graduate students, contributing to ongoing projects focused on bird populations, migration patterns, and habitat use in the New Brunswick region. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates passionate about birds, conservation, and field-based scientific inquiry.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with daily bird banding operations, including net setup, bird extraction, processing (identification, measurement, banding), and data recording.
- Participate in various field surveys, including point counts, transect walks, and nest monitoring.
- Maintain and calibrate field equipment, ensuring accuracy and reliability.
- Accurately record and manage field data, entering it into databases.
- Support laboratory tasks, such as sample preparation or basic analysis, as needed.
- Adhere to strict safety protocols and ethical guidelines for wildlife handling and research.
- Collaborate effectively with team members and contribute to a positive research environment.
- Conduct literature reviews and assist with report writing or presentation preparation.
Required Skills
- Strong interest and basic knowledge of ornithology and avian ecology.
- Ability to work effectively in outdoor conditions, often in challenging weather or terrain.
- Excellent attention to detail and data recording accuracy.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to follow instructions precisely and work independently when required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Enrollment in or recent graduation from a degree program in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Prior field experience with wildlife research or bird handling (e.g., mist-netting, banding).
- Familiarity with bird identification (visual and auditory) of common bird species in Atlantic Canada.
- Valid driver's license and ability to operate a vehicle (if required for field sites).
