Job Description
Durham County Council is seeking enthusiastic and dedicated 18-year-old individuals to join our Public Works team as Labourers. This is a fantastic long-term opportunity for motivated teens looking to start a career in public service and contribute directly to their community. You will play a crucial role in maintaining and improving public spaces, infrastructure, and amenities across various regions within County Durham. No prior experience is required, as comprehensive on-the-job training will be provided. We are looking for individuals with a strong work ethic, a commitment to safety, and a desire to learn and grow within a supportive team environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist skilled tradespersons and public works crews with various tasks.
- Perform general manual labor, including digging, lifting, carrying, and clearing debris.
- Support the maintenance of roads, parks, public buildings, and other infrastructure.
- Operate basic hand tools and power equipment under supervision.
- Help with groundskeeping duties such as landscaping, litter removal, and seasonal cleanup.
- Adhere to all safety regulations, policies, and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
- Load and unload materials and supplies, ensuring proper handling and storage.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of work sites and equipment.
- Work collaboratively with team members and supervisors to complete projects efficiently.
- Report any hazards, incidents, or equipment malfunctions to appropriate personnel.
Required Skills
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy objects and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Strong work ethic and reliability.
- Eagerness to learn and take direction.
- Basic understanding of safety principles (or willingness to learn quickly).
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Good communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Valid UK driving license (Category B).
- Previous experience in manual labor or outdoor work (e.g., gardening, volunteering).
- Basic first aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Knowledge of local geography within County Durham.
