Job Description
The University of California, Irvine is seeking a dedicated and passionate Ethnomusicologist (Assistant) to join our team, focusing on museum and research initiatives. This pivotal role supports senior ethnomusicologists and faculty in conducting cutting-edge research, managing extensive collections, and contributing to public-facing exhibitions. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in documenting, analyzing, and disseminating knowledge about global musical cultures, ensuring their preservation and appreciation for future generations. Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior ethnomusicologists and faculty in the design and execution of research projects on diverse musical traditions.
- Conduct extensive literature reviews, transcribe and analyze musical data, and contribute to the preparation of research reports, articles, and presentations.
- Manage, catalog, and digitize audio-visual recordings, field notes, and other ethnographic materials within our archives and collections.
- Support the development, curation, and installation of museum exhibitions, both physical and digital, related to world music.
- Facilitate outreach and engagement with cultural communities, artists, and scholars to enhance collaborative projects and educational programs.
- Maintain accurate records of collection items, ensuring proper storage, preservation, and accessibility.
- Assist in grant writing and fundraising efforts to secure support for research and exhibition initiatives.
Required Skills
- Master's degree in Ethnomusicology, Musicology, Anthropology, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated proficiency in ethnomusicological research methodologies, including fieldwork techniques, transcription, and analysis.
- Experience with archival management, digital preservation, and database systems for cultural collections.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and concisely.
- Familiarity with diverse global musical traditions and their cultural contexts.
- Proficiency in relevant software for audio/visual editing, data management, and presentation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology (or ABD status) from an accredited institution.
- Fluency in one or more non-English languages relevant to ethnomusicological research.
- Prior experience in museum or gallery settings, particularly with exhibition design and installation.
- Direct experience conducting ethnographic fieldwork.
- A proven track record of contributing to academic publications or public-facing projects.
