Job Description

Are you a passionate film student with an encyclopedic knowledge of cinema and a keen eye for detail? Netflix is seeking an Entry-Level Genre Specialist to join our content classification team in Provo, Utah. In this role, you will be instrumental in categorizing our vast library of films and series, ensuring accurate tagging and metadata creation that helps our members discover content they’ll love. You will analyze content, identify key thematic elements, and apply consistent genre classifications that enhance user experience and content discoverability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze film and television content for genre, sub-genre, and thematic elements.
  • Apply consistent and accurate metadata tags to new and existing titles according to established guidelines.
  • Collaborate with content, editorial, and product teams to refine classification standards and strategies.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of internal genre taxonomies and content categorization systems.
  • Stay informed about current trends in film and television, as well as evolving audience preferences and industry standards.
  • Provide detailed feedback on content suitability and classification challenges to relevant stakeholders.

Required Skills

  • Deep passion for film and television, with broad knowledge across various genres, historical periods, and international cinema.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong analytical skills for content evaluation.
  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities for clear and concise content descriptions.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and collaborate effectively within a team environment.
  • Proficiency with basic office software (e.g., Google Suite, Microsoft Office).
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new systems, software, and processes quickly and adapt to evolving workflows.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or recent graduate of a Film Studies, Media Studies, Library Science, or similar program.
  • Experience with content management systems (CMS) or large databases.
  • Familiarity with film criticism and theory, and an understanding of narrative structures.
  • Portfolio or examples of film analysis/review work, or a personal blog/database of film commentary.
  • Fluency in multiple languages is a plus, but not required.
