Job Description

BayCare Health System is seeking a dedicated and experienced Health Physics Specialist to join our dynamic team. This role is crucial for ensuring the safe handling and use of radioactive materials and radiation-producing equipment within our facilities. The Health Physics Specialist will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining radiation safety programs, conducting surveys, providing training, and ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive radiation safety programs for various modalities, including diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine, radiation therapy, and research.
  • Conduct radiation surveys and audits of facilities, equipment, and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and internal policies.
  • Perform calibration and maintenance of radiation detection equipment.
  • Provide radiation safety training to staff, including physicians, technologists, nurses, and ancillary personnel.
  • Investigate radiation incidents and accidents, determine root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Manage radioactive material inventories, waste disposal, and transportation in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Serve as a primary resource for radiation safety information and provide expert advice to management and staff.
  • Prepare detailed reports, documentation, and regulatory submissions.
  • Participate in regulatory inspections and ensure ongoing compliance with NRC, FDA, EPA, and state radiation control regulations.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Medical Physics, Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in applied health physics, preferably in a healthcare or medical setting.
  • Strong understanding of radiation protection principles, dosimetry, and instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with federal and state regulations pertaining to radioactive materials and radiation-producing equipment (e.g., NRC, FDA, state radiation control agencies).
  • Proficiency in conducting radiation surveys, calculations, and risk assessments.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in Health Physics or Medical Physics.
  • Certification by the American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) or American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP).
  • Experience with advanced radiation therapy technologies (e.g., IMRT, SBRT, brachytherapy).
  • Knowledge of environmental radiation monitoring and emergency response planning.
  • Experience with Monte Carlo simulations or other radiation transport modeling software.
