As a monitor, you will be responsible for identifying, documenting, and protecting paleontological resources during various construction and land disturbance projects. This is a field-intensive position requiring a strong understanding of paleontological principles, excellent observational skills, and the ability to work independently in challenging environments. This role offers a high hourly rate, reflecting the specialized expertise and demanding nature of the work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily paleontological monitoring of ground-disturbing activities (e.g., trenching, excavation, grading) in specified project areas within Utah and Nevada deserts.
  • Identify, assess, and document paleontological resources (fossils, fossil localities) in accordance with project-specific Paleontological Resource Management Plans (PRMPs) and federal/state regulations.
  • Implement appropriate mitigation measures, including fossil recovery, stabilization, and curation protocols, under the direction of a qualified paleontologist.
  • Maintain detailed field notes, daily logs, photographic records, and GPS data for all monitored activities and observed resources.
  • Communicate effectively with construction personnel, project managers, and lead paleontologists regarding discoveries and monitoring progress.
  • Prepare concise daily and weekly monitoring reports.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety protocols and site-specific health and safety plans.
  • Operate and maintain field equipment effectively.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Paleontology, Geology, Archaeology, or a closely related field with a strong emphasis on paleontology.
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional paleontological fieldwork experience, preferably in arid or desert environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and document fossilized remains from various geological periods common to the Western United States.
  • Proficiency in field data collection techniques, including GPS operation, mapping, and photography.
  • Ability to read and interpret geological maps, topographic maps, and construction plans.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Physical ability to conduct strenuous fieldwork, including walking long distances over uneven terrain, lifting up to 50 lbs, and working outdoors in extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, wind) for extended periods.
  • Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Paleontology or related field.
  • Experience with federal and state paleontological resource management regulations (e.g., BLM, USFS, State Historic Preservation Offices).
  • Certification in wilderness first aid or similar remote field safety training.
  • Experience with environmental compliance monitoring on large-scale infrastructure projects.

Perks & Benefits

  • Competitive high hourly rate.
  • Per diem for fieldwork travel and accommodation.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match.
  • Paid time off and holidays.

  • Company vehicle or mileage reimbursement for field travel.
  • Provision of specialized field equipment and safety gear.
