Job Description
As a Green Chemistry Scientist at Amyris, you will be at the forefront of developing innovative, environmentally friendly chemical processes and products. Your work will directly contribute to our mission of creating sustainable solutions through advanced biotechnology. This role requires a strong understanding of green chemistry principles, a passion for sustainability, and hands-on experience in laboratory research and development. You will design and execute experiments, analyze data, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to bring new bio-based technologies from concept to commercialization, ensuring our products meet the highest standards of environmental performance and efficacy.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and execution of experiments applying green chemistry principles to develop novel bio-based chemical processes and products.
- Evaluate and optimize synthetic routes for enhanced sustainability, reduced waste, and improved energy efficiency.
- Conduct comprehensive analysis of chemical reactions and product formulations using advanced analytical techniques.
- Collaborate with process engineering, manufacturing, and product development teams to scale up and commercialize new technologies.
- Research emerging trends and technologies in green chemistry, sustainability, and biotechnology to inform future innovation.
- Prepare detailed scientific reports, presentations, and technical documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
- Mentor junior scientists and contribute to a culture of scientific excellence and continuous improvement.
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and environmental standards in laboratory operations.
Required Skills
- Ph.D. in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
- 3+ years of post-doctoral or industrial experience in green chemistry, sustainable chemistry, or process development.
- Demonstrated expertise in applying the 12 principles of green chemistry.
- Proficiency in analytical techniques such as GC-MS, LC-MS, NMR, IR, and HPLC.
- Strong experimental design (DoE) and data analysis skills.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities and a strong desire to innovate.
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with fermentation processes and enzyme catalysis.
- Knowledge of life cycle assessment (LCA) methodologies.
- Familiarity with intellectual property development and patent application processes.
- Experience in a regulated industrial setting (e.g., FDA, REACH).
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals related to green chemistry or sustainable technologies.
