Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated Bridge Painting Sandblaster (Mate) to join our team in St. John’s. This role involves assisting skilled sandblasters in preparing steel bridge surfaces for painting, ensuring high-quality surface profiles and adherence to safety protocols. The ideal candidate will be physically fit, attentive to detail, and committed to working in challenging outdoor environments. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a critical infrastructure maintenance sector.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist lead sandblasters in setting up and dismantling sandblasting equipment, including compressors, pots, hoses, and nozzles.
- Perform abrasive blasting on steel bridge components to remove old paint, rust, and contaminants, achieving specified surface profiles.
- Monitor abrasive levels and assist with replenishment in blast pots.
- Inspect prepared surfaces for cleanliness and profile quality, reporting any issues to the lead sandblaster.
- Handle and store blasting abrasives and waste materials according to environmental and safety regulations.
- Operate and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE) including respirators and blast suits.
- Adhere strictly to all safety procedures, including working at heights, confined space entry, and heavy equipment operation.
- Assist with general site clean-up and organization.
- Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors.
Required Skills
- Physical stamina and ability to lift heavy equipment and materials (up to 50 lbs).
- Comfort working at heights and in varying weather conditions.
- Basic understanding of industrial safety practices and PPE usage.
- Strong work ethic and reliability.
- Ability to follow instructions accurately and work effectively as part of a team.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new techniques and equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in construction, industrial painting, or general labour.
- Valid Fall Protection and Confined Space Entry certifications.
- Knowledge of various abrasive blasting media and their applications.
- Familiarity with bridge maintenance or structural steel work.
