Job Description

We are seeking a passionate and experienced Carriage / Horse-Drawn Tour Driver to join our dedicated team in Stevenage. This unique tourism role involves providing enchanting horse-drawn tours for visitors across our beautiful estates and parklands. You will be responsible for the welfare of our magnificent horses, the safe operation of the carriage, and delivering engaging, informative tours that highlight the history and natural beauty of our properties. A genuine love for animals, exceptional customer service skills, and a commitment to safety are paramount.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely operate horse-drawn carriages for public tours, adhering to all safety protocols and regulations.
  • Care for, feed, groom, and stable horses, ensuring their health, well-being, and readiness for tours.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of horses, harnesses, and carriages.
  • Provide engaging and informative commentary to passengers about the local history, wildlife, and points of interest.
  • Assist passengers with boarding and alighting the carriage, ensuring their comfort and safety.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and presentation of the carriage and associated equipment.
  • Manage bookings and visitor interactions professionally and courteously.
  • Handle unexpected situations with calm and efficiency, always prioritizing safety.
  • Adhere to all National Trust policies and procedures, including those related to animal welfare and visitor experience.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 2 years of proven experience in handling, training, and driving horses.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of horse welfare, health, and behaviour.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse groups of visitors.
  • Strong commitment to safety for both horses and passengers.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid UK driving licence.
  • Physical fitness to perform duties including lifting, grooming, and driving for extended periods.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a tourism or customer service role.
  • Knowledge of local history and natural heritage around Stevenage and Hertfordshire.
  • First Aid certification.
  • Relevant equine qualifications or certifications.
