Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Forensic Analyst to join our Forensic Sciences Division with a focus on supporting state crime lab operations. The successful candidate will lead complex forensic analyses, mentor junior analysts, and contribute to the development and implementation of advanced forensic techniques. This pivotal role demands exceptional analytical abilities, strong leadership, and an unwavering commitment to scientific rigor and ethical practice within the criminal justice system. The Lead Forensic Analyst will play a critical role in solving complex criminal cases and providing expert testimony in court.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and perform advanced forensic analyses on a wide range of evidence types (e.g., DNA, toxicology, trace evidence, firearms, latent prints) in accordance with established protocols and accreditation standards.
  • Manage casework flow, prioritize assignments, and ensure timely completion of analyses while maintaining meticulous documentation.
  • Provide clear, concise, and compelling expert testimony in court regarding forensic findings and methodologies.
  • Mentor and train junior forensic analysts, fostering their professional development and ensuring adherence to best practices, safety regulations, and ethical guidelines.
  • Develop, validate, and implement new analytical methods and instrumentation to enhance laboratory capabilities.
  • Actively contribute to quality assurance and quality control programs, ensuring the integrity, reliability, and defensibility of all laboratory results.
  • Collaborate effectively with law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, and other stakeholders throughout the investigative and judicial processes.
  • Maintain current knowledge of forensic science advancements, relevant legal requirements, and national/international accreditation standards.
  • Participate in proficiency testing and continuing education to uphold scientific competency.

Required Skills

  • Extensive practical experience (minimum 5 years) in forensic analysis within a state, federal, or other accredited crime laboratory setting.
  • Proven proficiency in advanced analytical instrumentation and techniques relevant to at least one primary forensic discipline (e.g., molecular biology, analytical chemistry, ballistics).
  • Demonstrated leadership, supervisory, or mentorship abilities within a scientific or laboratory environment.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including a strong aptitude for report writing, presentations, and courtroom testimony.
  • Superior critical thinking, problem-solving, and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple complex cases simultaneously.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a high-performing team in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment.
  • In-depth expertise in quality assurance/control principles and laboratory accreditation standards (e.g., ISO/IEC 17025).
  • Strong ethical conduct and commitment to justice.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or Ph.D. in Forensic Science, Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, or a closely related scientific field from an accredited institution.
  • Certification by a recognized professional forensic board (e.g., American Board of Criminalistics [ABC], American Board of Forensic Toxicology [ABFT], International Association for Identification [IAI]).
  • Extensive experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and electronic case management.
  • Previous experience in method development, validation, and grant writing.
  • Participation in national forensic science organizations and committees.
