Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and meticulous Music Copyright Specialist to join our Intellectual Property team. This role is crucial for ensuring the accurate registration, protection, and management of our vast catalog of musical works. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of copyright law pertaining to music, exceptional organizational skills, and a commitment to maintaining the integrity of our intellectual property assets. Key Responsibilities
- Manage the registration of musical works with relevant copyright authorities (e.g., U.S. Copyright Office, international PROs).
- Monitor copyright statuses, renewal dates, and termination rights for existing catalog assets.
- Review and interpret copyright agreements, licenses, and clearances to ensure compliance.
- Conduct thorough research on copyright ownership and musical work registrations.
- Collaborate with legal teams on infringement cases and copyright disputes.
- Maintain and update comprehensive copyright databases and record-keeping systems.
- Assist in the onboarding process for new songwriters and their catalogs, ensuring proper copyright setup.
- Provide expert guidance on copyright best practices to internal teams.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Music Business, Legal Studies, or a related field.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in music copyright administration or intellectual property.
- Profound knowledge of U.S. and international copyright law and intellectual property rights relevant to music.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex databases and record-keeping systems.
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree or Juris Doctor (JD) in Intellectual Property.
- Experience with music publishing administration software (e.g., Vistex, RightsTracker).
- Familiarity with various Performing Rights Organizations (PROs) and Mechanical Rights Organizations (MROs) globally.
- Previous experience working with a major music publisher or record label.
- Understanding of digital rights management and new media licensing.
