Job Description
We are seeking a highly accurate and efficient Online Transcriptionist to support academic research projects across various departments at the University of Alberta. This contract position involves transcribing audio and video recordings of interviews, lectures, focus groups, and other research-related content. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional listening skills, a meticulous eye for detail, and a strong understanding of academic formatting and citation styles. This is a fully remote role, offering flexibility and the opportunity to contribute to impactful research from anywhere.
Key Responsibilities
- Accurately transcribe audio and video recordings into text format, ensuring high fidelity to spoken content.
- Review and proofread transcribed documents for grammar, punctuation, spelling, and factual accuracy.
- Adhere to specific formatting guidelines and style guides provided for each research project.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and data security protocols for sensitive research materials.
- Manage multiple transcription assignments, meeting deadlines and communicating progress effectively.
- Collaborate with researchers to clarify unclear audio or specific terminology as needed.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in English with excellent grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
- Demonstrated ability to type at least 60 words per minute with high accuracy.
- Exceptional listening comprehension skills, even with challenging audio quality or diverse accents.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing error-free transcripts.
- Proficiency with transcription software and word processing tools (e.g., Microsoft Word, Google Docs).
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively to meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in academic transcription, particularly with research interviews or focus groups.
- Familiarity with various academic disciplines (e.g., humanities, social sciences, health sciences).
- Experience with specific style guides (e.g., APA, MLA, Chicago).
- Ability to transcribe multi-speaker recordings with accurate speaker identification.
- A post-secondary certificate or degree in a related field (e.g., English, Communications).
