Job Description

The Ventura County Library is seeking an enthusiastic and detail-oriented Part-time Library Aide to join our dedicated team. This role is specifically designed for college students looking to gain valuable work experience in a supportive and engaging public service environment. As a Library Aide, you will play a crucial role in maintaining the organization of the library, assisting patrons, and supporting various library operations. This position offers flexible hours to accommodate academic schedules and provides an excellent opportunity to contribute to your local community while developing essential workplace skills. Key Responsibilities

  • Accurately shelve and organize library materials (books, DVDs, magazines, etc.) according to library classification systems.
  • Assist patrons with locating materials, using public computers, and basic inquiries with a friendly and helpful demeanor.
  • Check materials in and out using the library's circulation system, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
  • Maintain the neatness and order of shelves, reading areas, and general library spaces, contributing to a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Process new materials, including stamping, labeling, and preparing them for circulation.
  • Assist with special projects, library programs, and events as needed, supporting community engagement initiatives.
  • Provide friendly, efficient, and professional customer service to all library visitors.
  • Perform light clerical duties such as filing, sorting, and data entry as assigned.

Required Skills

  • Ability to accurately alphabetize and numerically sort materials.
  • Basic computer proficiency and comfort with technology, including common office software.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 25 lbs, push loaded book carts, and stand/walk for extended periods.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a college or university program.
  • Previous experience in a library, retail, or customer service setting.
  • Familiarity with library classification systems (e.g., Dewey Decimal, Library of Congress).
  • A genuine interest in books, learning, and serving the community.
  • Bilingual abilities (especially Spanish) are a plus.
