Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Radiation Protection Advisor to join our dedicated team at Westmead Hospital. This pivotal role involves ensuring the safe use of ionising and non-ionising radiation sources across our extensive clinical and research facilities. The successful candidate will provide expert advice, conduct risk assessments, develop and implement radiation safety programs, and ensure compliance with all relevant legislative and regulatory requirements. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive radiation safety programs in accordance with Australian standards and regulations.
- Provide expert advice to staff, management, and committees on all aspects of radiation protection, including safe work practices, dose optimisation, and emergency procedures.
- Conduct regular audits, inspections, and risk assessments of radiation facilities and equipment to ensure compliance and identify areas for improvement.
- Investigate radiation incidents and near-misses, preparing detailed reports and recommending corrective actions.
- Manage radiation monitoring programs, including personal dosimetry, environmental monitoring, and source inventory.
- Design and deliver training programs for staff on radiation safety principles and practices.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies, such as the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA), on matters pertaining to radiation safety licenses and compliance.
- Advise on the procurement, commissioning, and decommissioning of radiation-generating equipment and radioactive sources.
- Contribute to the development of policies, procedures, and guidelines related to radiation safety.
Required Skills
- Tertiary qualification in Medical Physics, Health Physics, Radiation Safety, or a related scientific discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a dedicated radiation protection role, preferably within a large healthcare or research setting.
- Thorough understanding of Australian radiation protection legislation, standards, and codes of practice (e.g., ARPANSA codes).
- Demonstrated ability to conduct radiation risk assessments and develop effective control measures.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Postgraduate qualification in Medical Physics or Radiation Protection.
- Certification as a Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) or equivalent professional accreditation.
- Experience with a variety of radiation modalities including diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine, and radiotherapy.
- Familiarity with quality management systems in a healthcare environment.
