Job Description
Join UPS as a Yard Spotter and play a crucial role in our logistics operations. In this position, you will be responsible for safely and efficiently moving trailers within our Fremont yard. This role is strictly yard-based; there is no road work involved. You will operate on a static shift roster, ensuring consistency and predictability in your schedule. We are looking for a safety-conscious individual with excellent operational skills to maintain the smooth flow of our terminal operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely and efficiently move trailers (vans, pups, 53-foot trailers) between dock doors and designated parking spots within the UPS yard.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of yard equipment (hostlers/yard tractors) and trailers.
- Monitor yard conditions and trailer inventory to ensure optimal flow and organization.
- Communicate effectively with dispatch, dock supervisors, and other team members regarding trailer movements and yard status.
- Adhere strictly to all company safety policies and procedures, including DOT regulations applicable to yard operations.
- Ensure equipment is fueled, cleaned, and maintained as necessary.
- Complete necessary paperwork and electronic logs accurately and in a timely manner.
Required Skills
- Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
- Minimum of 1 year experience operating commercial vehicles or heavy equipment.
- Ability to safely operate a yard hostler (yard dog/spotter truck).
- Strong understanding of yard safety protocols and procedures.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Physical ability to perform job duties, including climbing in and out of equipment, and inspecting trailers.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a Yard Spotter or Hostler operator.
- Experience in a high-volume freight or logistics environment.
- Familiarity with UPS yard procedures and equipment.
