Job Description
Join the YMCA team as a Weekend Camp Counselor with a focus on Youth Leadership! This part-time role is perfect for individuals passionate about empowering young people and contributing to a positive camp experience. You will be responsible for leading engaging activities, mentoring campers, and ensuring a safe and inclusive environment during weekend camp sessions. This position offers a unique opportunity to shape future leaders and make a lasting impact on their lives.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and lead age-appropriate recreational, educational, and leadership-focused activities for campers during weekend sessions.
- Supervise campers at all times, ensuring their safety and well-being during activities, meals, and free time.
- Act as a positive role model, mentor, and guide for campers, encouraging personal growth, teamwork, and respect.
- Facilitate leadership workshops and discussions designed to develop critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Communicate effectively with camp staff, parents, and campers to ensure a smooth and enjoyable camp experience.
- Assist with the setup and breakdown of camp facilities and equipment.
- Administer basic first aid as needed and follow all emergency protocols.
- Adhere to all YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to child protection and safety.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated experience working with children or youth in a recreational, educational, or supervisory capacity (e.g., coaching, tutoring, babysitting, volunteer work).
- Strong leadership potential and a commitment to youth development.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Enthusiasm, creativity, and a positive attitude.
- Ability to adapt to changing situations and maintain a flexible schedule.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; some college coursework in education, recreation, social work, or a related field is a plus.
- Previous experience as a camp counselor or in a similar outdoor/group leadership role.
- Knowledge of youth development principles and best practices.
- Certifications in specific outdoor activities (e.g., lifeguarding, rock climbing, wilderness first aid).
- Bilingual proficiency (especially Spanish) is a plus.
