Job Description
We are seeking a diligent and experienced Music Copyright Specialist to join our Intellectual Property team. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for managing complex music copyright issues, ensuring compliance with intellectual property laws, and protecting Google’s interests across various platforms. This position demands a strong understanding of music licensing, copyright enforcement, and digital rights management. You will work closely with legal counsel, content partners, and product teams to uphold a fair and robust ecosystem for music creators and consumers.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and resolve complex music copyright claims and disputes on Google platforms, including YouTube.
- Conduct thorough research and analysis of copyright ownership, licensing agreements, and usage rights for musical works.
- Collaborate with legal teams to develop and implement strategies for copyright enforcement and infringement prevention.
- Review and interpret music licensing agreements, providing guidance on their application within Google's services.
- Educate internal stakeholders on copyright best practices and evolving intellectual property laws relevant to music.
- Act as a point of contact for external content creators, rights holders, and legal representatives regarding music copyright matters.
- Contribute to the development and improvement of internal tools and processes for rights management.
- Stay informed about industry trends, technological advancements, and legal precedents in music copyright and intellectual property.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., Law, Music Business, Communications, or equivalent practical experience).
- 3+ years of experience in music copyright, intellectual property, or digital rights management.
- In-depth knowledge of copyright law (DMCA, international copyright treaties) as it pertains to music.
- Familiarity with music licensing models (e.g., mechanical, performance, synchronization) and collection societies.
- Proven ability to analyze complex legal documents and make sound judgments.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex legal concepts clearly.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with meticulous attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree or equivalent legal qualification.
- Experience working with content identification systems (e.g., YouTube Content ID) or other rights management platforms.
- Demonstrated experience in negotiating and interpreting music licensing agreements.
- Familiarity with global copyright landscapes and cross-border intellectual property issues.
- Proficiency in additional languages relevant to major music markets.
