Job Description

Are you passionate about the outdoors and eager to start a career in horticulture and grounds maintenance? The University of Nottingham is seeking a dedicated Grounds Maintenance Worker / Trainee Gardener to join our Estate Office team. This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic individual with little to no prior experience to learn the trade, develop valuable skills, and contribute to the beauty and upkeep of our prestigious university grounds. You will work as part of a supportive team, performing a variety of outdoor tasks essential for maintaining our high standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform general grounds maintenance tasks including mowing, strimming, edging, and weeding.
  • Assist with planting, pruning, and cultivating flowers, shrubs, and trees.
  • Participate in the maintenance of sports pitches and amenity areas.
  • Operate and maintain groundskeeping machinery and equipment safely (with training).
  • Undertake litter picking, leaf clearing, and general site tidiness.
  • Assist with irrigation systems and plant watering as required.
  • Learn and apply best practices in horticulture and grounds management.

  • A strong interest in horticulture and working outdoors.
  • Physical fitness and ability to perform manual tasks.
  • Willingness to learn and take direction.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Reliable and punctual.
  • Positive attitude and strong work ethic.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge of plants or gardening (e.g., from a hobby).
  • Full UK driving licence (desirable).
  • Experience using basic gardening tools (e.g., mowers, strimmers) a plus, but not essential as training will be provided.
