Job Description
We are seeking an innovative and highly skilled Flavor & Fragrance Chemist with a strong focus on sensory science to join our dynamic R&D team in Berkeley. This pivotal role will be responsible for the research, development, and application of novel flavor and fragrance compounds, leveraging sensory evaluation techniques to optimize product profiles. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of chemical structures, sensory perception, and consumer preferences, translating scientific insights into market-leading creations.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, synthesize, and characterize novel flavor and fragrance molecules and compositions.
- Conduct comprehensive sensory evaluations, including panel design, data analysis, and interpretation to guide product development.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (perfumers, flavorists, application scientists, marketing) to develop new products and improve existing ones.
- Operate and maintain analytical instrumentation (GC-MS, HPLC, NMR, etc.) for compound identification and quantification.
- Maintain accurate records of experiments, formulations, and results, adhering to Givaudan's quality standards.
- Stay abreast of industry trends, scientific advancements, and regulatory requirements in flavors and fragrances.
- Present findings and recommendations to internal stakeholders and external partners.
- Ensure all work is conducted in accordance with safety and environmental guidelines.
Required Skills
- Ph.D. or M.S. in Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Food Science, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of industry experience in flavor or fragrance chemistry, with a strong emphasis on sensory science.
- Proven expertise in synthetic organic chemistry and/or natural product chemistry.
- Proficiency in advanced analytical techniques (GC-MS, HPLC, NMR, IR).
- Strong understanding of sensory evaluation methodologies and statistical data analysis.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with olfactometry and/or gustatory assessment techniques.
- Knowledge of flavor and fragrance regulatory compliance and safety assessments.
- Familiarity with computational chemistry or cheminformatics tools.
- Prior experience leading project teams or mentoring junior scientists.
