Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Materials Scientist with a strong background in Chemistry to join our advanced aerospace materials research and development team. The successful candidate will play a critical role in the design, synthesis, characterization, and evaluation of novel materials for high-performance aerospace applications. This position focuses on chemical compositions, material degradation, and performance optimization in extreme environments, directly contributing to the next generation of aircraft, spacecraft, and defense systems. Relocation assistance is available for qualified candidates.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and development of new materials and processes with a focus on chemical properties for aerospace applications.
  • Perform advanced chemical characterization using techniques such as spectroscopy (FTIR, Raman), chromatography (GC-MS, HPLC), thermal analysis (TGA, DSC), and microscopy (SEM, TEM).
  • Design and execute experiments to evaluate material performance under various environmental conditions (e.g., high temperature, corrosion, radiation).
  • Analyze experimental data, interpret results, and prepare detailed technical reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams, including mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers, to integrate material solutions into aerospace platforms.
  • Develop and optimize material synthesis methods and processing techniques to meet specific application requirements.
  • Stay current with advancements in materials science, chemistry, and aerospace technologies to identify opportunities for innovation.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and quality standards in laboratory operations.
  • Contribute to patent applications and technical publications.

Required Skills

  • Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in inorganic and/or organic chemistry with a focus on material properties.
  • Proficiency in various analytical techniques for material characterization (e.g., FTIR, Raman, GC-MS, TGA, DSC, SEM).
  • Strong understanding of structure-property relationships in materials relevant to aerospace environments.
  • Experience with experimental design, data analysis, and statistical methods.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-doctoral experience or industry experience in aerospace, defense, or a related high-tech sector.
  • Experience with polymer chemistry, composite materials, coatings, or advanced ceramics.
  • Knowledge of material degradation mechanisms (e.g., oxidation, corrosion, fatigue) and mitigation strategies.
  • Familiarity with materials selection for extreme environments (high temperature, radiation, vacuum).
  • Proficiency with materials simulation software (e.g., DFT, molecular dynamics).
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance.

Perks & Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match.
  • Paid time off (vacation, sick leave, holidays).
