Job Description
We are seeking dedicated and professional Oversize Load Pilot Drivers to join our remote team. In this critical role, you will be responsible for safely escorting oversize and overweight loads across various routes, ensuring compliance with all state and federal regulations. This position offers the flexibility of remote work, allowing you to operate from your home base while coordinating directly with our dispatch and logistics teams. Your expertise will be vital in navigating challenging routes, communicating effectively with truck drivers and local authorities, and ensuring the safe passage of specialized freight.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate an escort vehicle (pilot car) to safely guide oversize and overweight loads.
- Communicate effectively via two-way radio with the truck driver and other pilot vehicles.
- Maintain awareness of road conditions, obstacles, and potential hazards.
- Ensure full compliance with all state, federal, and local regulations regarding oversize load transportation.
- Manage route planning, including identifying safe passing zones and potential detours.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of escort vehicle and equipment.
- Provide clear and concise directions and warnings to oncoming traffic and the prime mover.
- Complete necessary paperwork and logs accurately and in a timely manner.
Required Skills
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Proven experience as a pilot car driver or in commercial driving.
- Knowledge of DOT regulations for oversize/overweight loads.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to read maps and GPS, and navigate complex routes.
- Strong attention to detail and situational awareness.
- Proficiency with two-way radio communication.
- Must own or have access to a properly equipped pilot car.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Pilot/Escort Vehicle Operator (P/EVO) certification.
- Experience with various types of oversize loads (e.g., wind turbines, construction equipment).
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Mechanical aptitude for minor vehicle repairs.
- Experience working as an independent contractor.
