Job Description

As an Entry-Level Behavioral Health Tech at NYC Health + Hospitals in Brooklyn, you will play a crucial role in providing compassionate, direct support to patients facing behavioral health challenges within a public health setting. This position is ideal for individuals passionate about mental well-being and seeking to begin a career in healthcare, offering invaluable hands-on experience and a direct path to contributing to community health. You will work under the supervision of licensed professionals, assisting with patient care activities, maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment, and facilitating patient engagement in treatment plans. This is an on-site position based in one of our Brooklyn facilities, where you will be an integral part of a dedicated interdisciplinary team committed to patient recovery and empowerment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist licensed behavioral health professionals in the delivery of patient care, including monitoring and documenting patient behavior and progress.
  • Provide direct supervision and support to patients in group and individual settings, ensuring their safety and well-being.
  • Facilitate therapeutic activities and educational sessions under guidance, promoting a positive and healing environment.
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and therapeutic unit environment, including checking supplies and equipment.
  • Document patient observations, interventions, and responses accurately and in a timely manner within electronic health records.
  • Collaborate effectively with nurses, social workers, psychiatrists, and other team members to ensure coordinated care.
  • Assist patients with daily living activities as needed, promoting independence and dignity.
  • Respond to crisis situations calmly and effectively, following established protocols and seeking immediate assistance from senior staff.
  • Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and continuous professional development opportunities.

Required Skills

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Demonstrated empathy, compassion, and a genuine desire to help others.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Basic computer proficiency for documentation.
  • Ability to maintain composure and respond appropriately in challenging situations.
  • Commitment to patient confidentiality and ethical practice.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, public health, or a related human services field.
  • Previous volunteer or internship experience in a healthcare, mental health, or social service setting.
  • Knowledge of basic behavioral health concepts or crisis intervention techniques.
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Bilingual proficiency (e.g., Spanish, Haitian Creole, Mandarin) relevant to the Brooklyn community.
