Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Digital Archivist to join our remote team, focusing on historical data. In this role, you will be instrumental in the long-term preservation, organization, and accessibility of Google’s vast and diverse historical digital assets. This position requires a deep understanding of archival principles, digital preservation techniques, and metadata standards. You will work with various internal teams to ensure the integrity and usability of historical data for research, development, and corporate memory.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement strategies for the long-term preservation and access of digital historical data.
- Perform metadata creation, enhancement, and quality control for digital assets.
- Manage and maintain digital archives, ensuring data integrity, security, and accessibility.
- Collaborate with engineering and product teams to integrate archival practices into data lifecycle management.
- Conduct research into digital preservation best practices and emerging technologies.
- Provide expert guidance on copyright, intellectual property, and privacy issues related to archival collections.
- Support internal and external researchers in accessing and utilizing historical digital resources.
- Prepare reports on collection status, usage, and preservation needs.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in digital archiving software and systems (e.g., Archivematica, Preservica).
- Strong knowledge of metadata standards (e.g., MODS, EAD, Dublin Core).
- Experience with data management and database systems.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Library Science, Archival Studies, Information Science, or a related field.
- Experience with large-scale digital collections and distributed data environments.
- Familiarity with programming languages for data manipulation (e.g., Python, R).
- Knowledge of digital forensics and data recovery techniques.
- Previous experience at a major technology company or large-scale data organization.
