Job Description

Oklahoma City Public Schools is seeking an enthusiastic and skilled High School Jazz Band Instructor to lead our evening rehearsals. This contract position is ideal for a dedicated musician and educator passionate about jazz and eager to inspire the next generation of instrumentalists. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing students’ musicality, improvisational skills, and understanding of jazz theory and history. Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and conduct evening jazz band rehearsals, focusing on performance readiness and musical development.
  • Teach fundamental and advanced jazz techniques, including improvisation, rhythm, harmony, and ensemble playing.
  • Select appropriate repertoire that challenges students and exposes them to diverse jazz styles.
  • Prepare students for performances, competitions, and district-wide events.
  • Provide individual and group feedback to students to enhance their instrumental proficiency and understanding of jazz concepts.
  • Maintain inventory and care for musical instruments and equipment.
  • Collaborate with other music faculty and school administration to align the jazz program with overall music curriculum goals.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages creativity, collaboration, and student engagement.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in instrumental music, particularly within the jazz idiom.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting and leading instrumental ensembles.
  • Strong understanding of jazz theory, history, and improvisation techniques.
  • Ability to communicate complex musical concepts effectively to high school students.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Commitment to fostering a positive and encouraging learning atmosphere.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Music Education, Jazz Studies, or a related field.
  • Oklahoma teaching certification (or eligibility) in instrumental music.
  • Prior experience teaching or assisting a high school jazz band.
  • Proven ability to recruit and retain student participation in extracurricular music programs.
  • Experience with arranging or composing for jazz ensemble.
