Job Description

Join NHS Lothian as a Medical Specimen Handler, a vital role in our pathology services. You will be responsible for the accurate and safe handling, processing, and dispatch of various medical specimens, ensuring their integrity and traceability throughout the laboratory workflow. This role requires meticulous attention to detail, adherence to strict health and safety protocols, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. Your contribution directly supports diagnostic processes and patient care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive, sort, and log medical specimens (blood, urine, tissue, etc.) accurately.
  • Prepare specimens for analysis, including aliquoting and labelling.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment used for specimen processing.
  • Adhere strictly to all health and safety regulations and standard operating procedures.
  • Maintain detailed records of specimen movement and storage.
  • Assist laboratory scientific staff with general lab duties as required.
  • Ensure proper disposal of biological waste.
  • Communicate effectively with other team members regarding specimen status.

Required Skills

  • Proven ability to follow detailed instructions accurately.
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Basic computer literacy for data entry.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Understanding of health and safety principles in a laboratory setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a laboratory or healthcare setting.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • First aid certification.
