Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Percussion Specialist to join our high school marching band program in Wesley Chapel, FL. This vital role will involve working directly with high school students, focusing on developing their percussion skills, musicality, and technique within the context of a competitive marching band. The Percussion Specialist will be instrumental in preparing students for performances, competitions, and fostering a love for music. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert instruction in all aspects of marching percussion, including battery (snare, tenor, bass drums) and front ensemble (mallets, timpani, auxiliary percussion).
  • Develop and implement practice routines, exercises, and warm-ups tailored to the ensemble's needs and individual student progress.
  • Assist the band director with musical arrangements, drill integration, and overall show design related to the percussion section.
  • Conduct sectional rehearsals, focusing on technique, rhythm, dynamics, and musical interpretation.
  • Monitor and evaluate student progress, providing constructive feedback and support.
  • Maintain percussion instruments and equipment, ensuring they are in optimal working condition.
  • Collaborate with other band staff to ensure a cohesive and high-quality overall band performance.
  • Attend all rehearsals, performances, and competitions as required by the marching band schedule.
  • Foster a positive, disciplined, and encouraging learning environment for all students.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in marching percussion techniques and instruction across battery and front ensemble.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach and motivate high school-aged students.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
  • Ability to read and interpret musical scores and percussion specific notation.
  • Patience, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Music Education, Performance, or a related field.
  • Previous experience teaching or instructing high school marching band percussion.
  • Familiarity with current trends and techniques in marching band percussion.
  • Experience with music notation software (e.g., Sibelius, Finale) is a plus.
  • Valid Florida teaching certification (not required for this specialist role, but a plus).
