Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Materials Chemist to join our advanced prototype development team in Stamford, CT. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for leading the design, synthesis, and characterization of novel materials for cutting-edge applications. You will drive innovation from concept through to early-stage prototyping, working closely with cross-functional teams including engineering, manufacturing, and product development. This is an exciting opportunity for a chemist with a passion for discovery and a proven track record in bringing new material solutions to life.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design, synthesis, and formulation of new materials and chemical processes for prototype applications.
- Conduct comprehensive material characterization using various analytical techniques (e.g., spectroscopy, microscopy, thermal analysis, rheology).
- Develop and optimize experimental methodologies to evaluate material performance and properties.
- Manage and execute multiple R&D projects, ensuring timely delivery within budget and scope.
- Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams to integrate new materials into product designs.
- Analyze and interpret complex data, presenting findings and recommendations to stakeholders.
- Mentor junior chemists and contribute to a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
- Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols and quality standards in all laboratory operations.
- Document research findings thoroughly in reports, presentations, and technical specifications.
Required Skills
- Ph.D. in Materials Chemistry, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of industrial R&D experience in materials development and prototyping.
- Strong expertise in organic synthesis, polymer chemistry, or inorganic materials science.
- Proficiency in a wide range of analytical and characterization techniques (e.g., FTIR, NMR, GC-MS, SEM, TEM, DSC, TGA, DMA).
- Proven ability to lead projects from conception to successful prototype demonstration.
- Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, and experimental design skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting and stakeholder presentations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with advanced composite materials, adhesives, coatings, or functional films.
- Familiarity with process scale-up and manufacturing considerations.
- Track record of intellectual property generation (patents, publications).
- Proficiency in statistical analysis and design of experiments (DOE) software.
