Job Description

Are you passionate about swimming and eager to inspire others to develop water safety skills? The YMCA of Greater Toronto is seeking enthusiastic and dedicated Swim Instructor Assistants to join our aquatic team in Oshawa. This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals looking for weekend work with a high hourly rate, assisting certified instructors in delivering high-quality swimming lessons. You will play a crucial role in creating a safe, fun, and educational environment for our participants.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist certified Swim Instructors in planning and delivering engaging swimming lessons for various age groups and skill levels.
  • Actively participate in in-water instruction, demonstrating techniques and providing direct support to participants.
  • Ensure the safety of all participants at all times, maintaining constant vigilance and awareness of the aquatic environment.
  • Help manage class activities, organize equipment, and prepare the pool area for lessons.
  • Provide positive encouragement and constructive feedback to swimmers, fostering a supportive learning atmosphere.
  • Communicate effectively with instructors, participants, and parents regarding progress and program details.
  • Adhere to all YMCA safety protocols, emergency procedures, and aquatic guidelines.
  • Attend regular staff meetings and professional development sessions as required.

Required Skills

  • Strong swimming abilities and comfort in various aquatic environments.
  • Current Standard First Aid with CPR-C certification (or willingness to obtain immediately).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, especially with children and parents.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Reliability and punctuality for all scheduled shifts, particularly on weekends.
  • Enthusiasm for teaching and helping others achieve their swimming goals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with children or in a recreational setting.
  • Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross certifications.
  • Prior experience assisting with swimming lessons.
  • Lifesaving Society Assistant Instructor or equivalent certification.
