Job Description
Swansons Nursery is seeking enthusiastic and responsible teens to join our team as a Nursery Hand with a focus on greenhouse and garden operations. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals aged 16-19 who have a passion for plants, a strong work ethic, and are eager to learn about horticulture in a dynamic retail setting. You will play a vital role in maintaining the health and appearance of our plant stock, assisting customers, and ensuring our greenhouse and garden areas are always welcoming and well-organized. This position offers hands-on experience and a chance to contribute to our beautiful nursery environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Watering plants in the greenhouse, retail areas, and outdoor garden sections according to specific needs.
- Assisting with potting and repotting plants, ensuring proper soil and container use.
- Organizing and merchandising plant displays, ensuring an attractive and tidy presentation.
- Helping with general nursery maintenance, including sweeping, tidying, and cleaning work areas.
- Moving and arranging plants, soil bags, and other garden supplies.
- Assisting customers with locating plants and basic gardening questions.
- Learning and adhering to safety protocols for handling plants and equipment.
- Working collaboratively with other team members to achieve daily goals.
Required Skills
- Ages 16-19
- Genuine interest in plants, gardening, or outdoor work
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting up to 25 lbs, bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods
- Reliable, punctual, and a strong sense of responsibility
- Ability to follow instructions and work independently or as part of a team
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in a retail environment or working with plants (even personal gardening projects)
- Enrollment in a high school horticulture or agriculture program
- Availability to work weekends and some holidays during peak seasons
