Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Paleontological Database Administrator to join our High-Level IT team. This critical role involves the design, implementation, and maintenance of robust database systems essential for managing vast and complex paleontological data sets. The successful candidate will ensure data integrity, security, and accessibility, supporting groundbreaking research in paleontology and related scientific fields. Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain complex relational and non-relational database systems for paleontological collections and research data.
- Ensure the integrity, security, and performance of all paleontological databases through regular monitoring, backups, and optimization.
- Develop and implement data migration strategies to integrate legacy data into new systems.
- Provide technical support and training to researchers and staff on database usage, query optimization, and data entry best practices.
- Collaborate with paleontologists and domain experts to understand data requirements and translate them into effective database solutions.
- Implement and enforce data governance policies, including access control, privacy, and compliance with relevant standards.
- Document database architecture, processes, and user guides.
- Stay abreast of emerging database technologies and paleontological data management trends to recommend continuous improvements.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Database Administrator, specifically with large, complex datasets.
- Expertise in SQL and experience with database systems such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, or SQL Server.
- Strong understanding of data modeling, database design, and normalization principles.
- Proficiency in scripting languages (e.g., Python, Perl) for automation and data manipulation.
- Experience with Linux/Unix operating systems.
- Knowledge of data security best practices and disaster recovery planning.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Paleontology, or a related scientific field.
- Experience with GIS (Geographic Information Systems) data and tools.
- Familiarity with paleontological nomenclature, taxonomy, and data standards.
- Previous experience working in an academic research environment or natural history museum.
- Experience with NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra).
- Certification in database administration (e.g., Oracle Certified Professional, Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate).
