We are seeking an innovative Plastic Processing Chemist with a strong focus on recycling and eco-friendly solutions to join our dynamic R&D team in Irvine, CA. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in developing next-generation plastic materials, optimizing processing techniques for recycled content, and driving advancements in the circular economy of plastics. Your expertise will directly impact our ability to deliver sustainable products and solutions across various industries, from automotive to packaging.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and optimize plastic processing parameters for various polymer types, with a strong emphasis on post-consumer recycled (PCR) and post-industrial recycled (PIR) materials.
- Conduct research into novel recycling technologies and incorporate recycled plastics into high-performance applications.
- Characterize the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of plastics and composites, both virgin and recycled, using a range of analytical techniques (e.g., DSC, TGA, FTIR, rheology, tensile testing).
- Design and execute experiments to improve material properties, processability, and sustainability of plastic formulations.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including material scientists, engineers, and production personnel, to scale up successful laboratory developments.
- Analyze data, interpret results, and prepare detailed reports and presentations for internal stakeholders and external partners.
- Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory requirements related to plastic recycling and sustainable materials.
- Ensure adherence to safety protocols and environmental regulations in all laboratory and pilot plant activities.
Required Skills
- Ph.D. or Master's degree in Polymer Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Proven experience (minimum 4 years) in plastic processing techniques (e.g., extrusion, injection molding, compounding).
- Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of polymer chemistry and material science.
- Experience with characterization techniques for plastics (e.g., mechanical testing, thermal analysis, spectroscopy).
- Familiarity with various types of plastics and their applications (e.g., PE, PP, PET, PVC, PC, ABS).
- Demonstrated ability to design experiments, analyze data, and troubleshoot technical challenges.
- Excellent communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience specifically with recycling processes, polymer degradation, and circular economy principles.
- Knowledge of additives used in plastics for improved performance or processing.
- Familiarity with life cycle assessment (LCA) principles and sustainable product development.
- Experience in a manufacturing or industrial R&D environment.
- Proficiency in statistical analysis software or data modeling.
