Job Description

First Presbyterian Church of New Port Richey is seeking a dedicated and talented Church Organist / Music Director to lead our congregation in worship through music. This is a stable, part-time weekend role vital to our spiritual services. The ideal candidate will be proficient in organ and piano, capable of directing a volunteer choir, and passionate about enhancing the worship experience through a blend of traditional and contemporary sacred music. You will be responsible for providing musical accompaniment for all regular weekend services, special seasonal services, and directing our choir, fostering a joyful and engaging musical atmosphere.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary organist and pianist for all regular Sunday services and special worship events (e.g., Christmas, Easter, Maundy Thursday).
  • Select appropriate hymns, anthems, and service music in collaboration with the Pastor, aligning with weekly lectionary and sermon themes.
  • Direct and rehearse the adult volunteer choir, preparing them for weekly anthems and special musical offerings.
  • Recruit, encourage, and mentor choir members, fostering a positive and supportive environment.
  • Coordinate with guest musicians for special services as needed.
  • Maintain the church's musical instruments, including the organ and piano, ensuring they are in good working order.
  • Manage the church's music library and acquire new music as approved.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings as required and participate in worship planning.
  • Provide musical accompaniment for weddings, funerals, and other special occasions held at the church, with additional compensation opportunities.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in playing the organ and piano for worship services.
  • Demonstrated experience in directing a church choir.
  • Strong understanding of Christian liturgy and sacred music.
  • Ability to select and adapt music appropriate for various worship styles.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with clergy, staff, and volunteers.
  • Reliability and punctuality for all scheduled services and rehearsals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Music, Organ Performance, Church Music, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience as a Church Organist or Music Director.
  • Knowledge of various musical styles, including traditional hymns, gospel, and contemporary worship music.
  • Experience with music software and audio equipment.
