Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and reliable Hospital Porter to join our essential team, supporting the smooth operation of Colchester Hospital. This vital role involves working in close partnership with local council services and various NHS departments, ensuring the safe and efficient transport of patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies throughout the hospital site. As a Hospital Porter, you will be at the heart of patient care, contributing significantly to a positive patient experience and maintaining a well-functioning healthcare environment. This is an on-site role that requires physical fitness and a compassionate approach.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely transport patients, often on beds, trolleys, or in wheelchairs, to and from wards, clinics, and departments.
  • Move medical equipment, including sensitive and expensive machinery, between areas as required.
  • Collect and deliver medical records, specimens, blood products, and pharmacy items.
  • Handle and dispose of clinical and general waste following strict hospital protocols.
  • Assist with the delivery and distribution of linen, postal services, and other supplies.
  • Respond promptly to requests via radio or pager, prioritizing tasks efficiently.
  • Maintain a clean and tidy working environment, ensuring trolleys and equipment are clean and ready for use.
  • Provide compassionate support to patients and their families, ensuring their comfort and dignity during transport.
  • Adhere to all health and safety regulations and hospital policies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a healthcare or customer service environment
  • Knowledge of hospital layouts and departmental functions
  • Manual handling training certificate
  • Basic First Aid certification
