Job Description

The Council on Foreign Relations is seeking a dynamic and highly motivated Speechwriting & Communications Intern to join our Public Affairs team in Manhattan. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in high-level communications, speechwriting, and public relations within a leading foreign policy organization. The intern will support senior staff and fellows in crafting compelling narratives, policy briefs, and public statements, contributing directly to our mission of informing public discourse on critical global issues. This role is ideal for individuals passionate about current events, policy, and effective communication strategies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in researching and drafting speeches, talking points, articles, and op-eds for senior staff and fellows.
  • Support the development of communication strategies for various policy initiatives and public engagements.
  • Conduct thorough research on complex foreign policy topics to inform messaging and content creation.
  • Help prepare press releases, media advisories, and other public relations materials.
  • Monitor media coverage and public discourse relevant to CFR's work and U.S. foreign policy.
  • Collaborate with the broader communications team on digital content creation and social media engagement.
  • Provide administrative support to the Public Affairs department as needed.

Required Skills

  • Exceptional writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to conduct in-depth research and synthesize complex information clearly and concisely.
  • Strong understanding of current events and international affairs.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Communications, Journalism, English, Political Science, International Relations, or a related field.
  • Previous internship experience in a communications, public relations, or policy-oriented setting.
  • Familiarity with AP style guidelines.
  • Experience with content management systems or social media platforms.
