Job Description
The University of South Florida (USF) Cultural Heritage Institute seeks a passionate and detail-oriented Ethnomusicologist (Assistant) to join our dynamic team. This role is crucial for supporting our museum collection management, contributing to ongoing research projects, and facilitating public educational programs focused on music and sound traditions worldwide. The ideal candidate will have a strong academic background in ethnomusicology, a keen interest in cultural preservation, and a commitment to collaborative work in a museum and research environment. This is an on-site position at our Wesley Chapel facility.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the cataloging, preservation, and exhibition of musical instrument collections and audio archives.
- Conduct preliminary research on various ethnomusicological topics, including literature reviews and data collection.
- Support senior ethnomusicologists in field research, interviews, and data analysis.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of educational programs and public outreach initiatives.
- Prepare research summaries, reports, and presentations for internal and external audiences.
- Collaborate with other museum staff on interdisciplinary projects.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation related to collections and research activities.
Required Skills
- Master's degree in Ethnomusicology, Musicology, Anthropology with a focus on music, or a related field.
- Demonstrated understanding of diverse musical cultures and traditions.
- Proficiency in research methodologies and academic writing.
- Experience with museum collections management systems or archival practices.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. (or ABD) in Ethnomusicology or a closely related discipline.
- Fluency in one or more non-English languages relevant to ethnomusicological research.
- Prior experience in a museum, archive, or research institution.
- Familiarity with digital humanities tools and audio/video editing software.
- Experience in grant writing or project proposal development.
