Job Description
Are you a motivated 14-year-old looking for an incredible opportunity to develop your leadership skills, gain valuable experience, and make a real difference in your community? The YMCA of the Monterey Peninsula is seeking enthusiastic Camp Counselor Trainees for our summer programs in Salinas! This unique role is designed for young teens eager to learn the ropes of camp counseling, mentor younger children, and become positive role models. You’ll work alongside experienced counselors, participate in training, and contribute to creating unforgettable summer experiences for campers. This is a fantastic entry point into youth development, offering a supportive environment for personal growth and leadership building.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior camp counselors with daily camp activities, games, and crafts.
- Engage with campers, helping to ensure their safety, participation, and enjoyment.
- Support the implementation of planned activities, preparing materials and guiding children.
- Serve as a positive role model for campers, demonstrating enthusiasm, respect, and good sportsmanship.
- Participate actively in all required training sessions and team meetings.
- Help maintain a clean, organized, and safe camp environment.
- Communicate effectively with fellow trainees, counselors, and camp leadership.
- Learn and practice basic first aid and emergency procedures under supervision.
Required Skills
- Must be 14 years of age by the start of the camp season.
- Strong desire to work with children and contribute to their positive development.
- Enthusiastic, energetic, and positive attitude.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Reliable, punctual, and responsible.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Willingness to learn and take direction from experienced staff.
- Demonstrated interest in leadership and community service.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous volunteer experience with children (e.g., babysitting, junior sports coaching, church groups).
- Participation in school leadership programs or community service activities.
- Basic knowledge of recreational games, songs, or crafts.
- Certification in CPR/First Aid (or willingness to obtain with YMCA assistance).
