Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and vigilant Oversize Load Pilot Driver to join our remote team. In this critical escort vehicle role, you will be instrumental in ensuring the safe and efficient transport of oversized loads across various routes. Operating from your remote base, you will use your specialized vehicle to guide and protect our valuable freight, communicating constantly with the truck driver and monitoring traffic conditions. This role requires exceptional judgment, strong communication skills, and a steadfast commitment to safety regulations. As a remote position, you will manage your schedule and routes, ensuring seamless coordination with our logistics team.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate an escort vehicle (pilot car) for oversized and overweight loads, maintaining required distances and visibility.
- Communicate continuously and effectively with the oversized load truck driver, dispatch, and relevant authorities.
- Ensure the safety of the load, other motorists, and the public by identifying and mitigating potential hazards.
- Implement and adhere to all federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to oversized load movements.
- Scout routes in advance for potential obstacles, low clearances, narrow passages, and other challenges.
- Manage and maintain your escort vehicle, ensuring it is properly equipped with flags, signs, lights, and communication devices.
- Document trip details, incidents, and communicate status updates promptly.
- Assist in emergency situations as required, following established protocols.
Required Skills
- Valid Driver's License (CDL preferred, but not always required for escort roles depending on state regulations).
- Clean driving record with no major infractions.
- Proven experience in long-haul driving or professional driving.
- Exceptional situational awareness and defensive driving skills.
- Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to read maps, GPS, and understand complex route instructions.
- Knowledge of Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and state-specific oversize load escort requirements.
- Proficiency with communication equipment (CB radio, two-way radio).
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as an oversize load pilot/escort driver.
- Pilot Car Certification or equivalent specialized training.
- Familiarity with various types of oversized cargo and their specific escort needs.
- Basic mechanical knowledge for minor vehicle troubleshooting on the road.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
