Job Description

Join the City of Powell River Emergency Services as a Public Safety Telecommunicator, a critical role where you will be the first point of contact for individuals experiencing emergencies. Key Responsibilities

  • Receive and evaluate incoming emergency (911) and non-emergency calls, quickly determining the nature and location of the incident.
  • Prioritize calls and dispatch appropriate police, fire, and medical personnel effectively and efficiently.
  • Maintain constant communication with field units, providing critical information, updates, and support.
  • Accurately record and document all calls, dispatches, and related information in a computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system.
  • Provide pre-arrival instructions to callers in medical emergencies or other situations as needed.
  • Monitor multiple radio frequencies, alarm systems, and video feeds simultaneously.
  • Adhere to all departmental policies, procedures, and relevant regulations.
  • Maintain professionalism, empathy, and composure during highly stressful situations.

Required Skills

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Strong active listening and comprehension abilities.
  • Ability to make quick, sound decisions under pressure.
  • Excellent multi-tasking and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications and data entry.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a call center, dispatch, or customer service environment.
  • Knowledge of local geography and road networks in Powell River and surrounding areas.
  • Completion of a Public Safety Telecommunicator course.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
