Job Description
The University of South Florida Digital Heritage Lab is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented 3D Scanning Technician to join our team, focusing on the digital preservation of fossil specimens. In this critical role, you will utilize advanced 3D scanning technologies to capture high-resolution data from invaluable paleontological artifacts, contributing to research, educational outreach, and the long-term digital archiving of our collections. This on-site position offers an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of technology and natural history, ensuring the accessibility and study of fossil records for future generations.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain various 3D scanning equipment (e.g., structured-light scanners, laser scanners) for a diverse range of fossil specimens.
- Process raw scan data, including alignment, merging, mesh generation, and texture mapping, using specialized software (e.g., Geomagic Wrap, Artec Studio, MeshLab).
- Ensure high data quality, accuracy, and adherence to established digital preservation standards and protocols.
- Collaborate with paleontologists, researchers, and curators to understand project requirements and specimen handling best practices.
- Perform basic maintenance and calibration of scanning hardware.
- Document scanning procedures, metadata, and progress for each project.
- Assist in the training of new personnel or student interns on 3D scanning techniques.
- Contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of digital archiving workflows.
Required Skills
- Proven experience with 3D scanning technologies and software, particularly structured-light or laser scanning.
- Proficiency in 3D data processing software (e.g., Geomagic Wrap, Artec Studio, PolyWorks, ZBrush).
- Strong understanding of 3D geometry, mesh topology, and digital asset creation.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to work with delicate and irreplaceable specimens.
- Basic understanding of paleontological or geological concepts, or a strong interest in natural history.
- Ability to troubleshoot technical issues with scanning hardware and software.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, Geology, Paleontology, Museum Studies, Digital Media, or a related field.
- Experience with advanced photogrammetry techniques.
- Familiarity with database management systems for digital collections.
- Prior experience working in a museum, research institution, or academic lab setting.
- Knowledge of scripting or programming (e.g., Python) for automation of data processing tasks.
