Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Cardiac Unit Porter to join our vital team at Royal Berkshire Hospital. This role is crucial for the smooth operation of our busy Cardiac Unit, ensuring patients are transported safely and comfortably, and essential equipment and supplies are moved efficiently. Key Responsibilities

  • Safely transport patients, often critically ill, to and from the Cardiac Unit for tests, procedures, and ward transfers using wheelchairs, beds, and trolleys.
  • Move medical equipment, including monitors, oxygen cylinders, and specialised cardiac machinery, within the unit and to other departments as required.
  • Deliver patient specimens, medical notes, pharmacy items, and other essential supplies promptly and securely.
  • Provide compassionate support to patients and their families during transport, ensuring comfort and dignity.
  • Assist nursing and medical staff with patient transfers and positioning as needed.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and good working order of all transport equipment, reporting any faults or damage.
  • Adhere strictly to all hospital policies, health and safety regulations, and infection control procedures.

Required Skills

  • Excellent physical fitness and stamina for frequent lifting, pushing, and pulling.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a friendly and reassuring manner.
  • A compassionate and empathetic approach to patient care.
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
  • Understanding of the importance of confidentiality and patient privacy.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a porter or in a similar support role within a healthcare environment.
  • Knowledge of hospital layouts and procedures.
  • Manual handling training certification.
  • First Aid qualification.
