Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated, energetic, and compassionate Day Surgery Porter to join our vital team at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. This full-time role is crucial for the smooth operation of our Day Surgery Unit, primarily during fast-paced morning shifts. You will be responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of patients, equipment, and specimens, ensuring a clean and supportive environment for both patients and staff. The successful candidate will thrive in a dynamic healthcare setting, demonstrating empathy, reliability, and excellent communication skills while adhering strictly to all health and safety protocols.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely transport patients, including those with limited mobility, via wheelchair or bed between the Day Surgery Unit, wards, and other hospital departments.
  • Move medical equipment, supplies, and specimens as required, ensuring proper handling and hygiene protocols are followed.
  • Assist in maintaining cleanliness and tidiness within the Day Surgery Unit, including bed making and preparing recovery areas.
  • Respond promptly and courteously to requests from medical, nursing, and administrative staff.
  • Provide compassionate support and reassurance to patients and their families, ensuring their comfort during transit.
  • Adhere strictly to all health and safety regulations, infection control policies, and patient confidentiality guidelines.
  • Report any issues with equipment, facilities, or patient well-being to the appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
  • Assist with basic administrative tasks such as logging patient movements or equipment transfers.

  • Strong physical stamina and ability to perform manual handling tasks safely and repeatedly.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting, particularly as a porter or in a patient-facing role.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology and hospital layout.
  • Experience with manual handling equipment and techniques.
  • A valid First Aid certification.
