Job Description
Are you an experienced, entrepreneurial truck driver looking for the freedom to operate on your own terms? FedEx Freight is seeking professional Independent Contractor Trucking partners to join our network in the Fort Wayne, IN area. Key Responsibilities
- Operate your own registered and insured commercial motor vehicle (CMV) to transport freight safely and efficiently.
- Adhere strictly to all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, company policies, and best practices for vehicle operation and cargo securement.
- Manage your own routes and schedule, making informed decisions on loads accepted, ensuring timely pickup and delivery.
- Maintain detailed and accurate logs, records, and trip documentation as required by federal regulations and company guidelines.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections, ensuring your equipment is in optimal working condition.
- Provide exceptional customer service when interacting with shippers and receivers.
- Handle freight with care, ensuring cargo integrity from origin to destination.
- Manage all aspects of your independent trucking business, including vehicle maintenance, fuel management, and administrative tasks.
Required Skills
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements (e.g., Hazmat, Tanker, Doubles/Triples, if applicable to specific loads).
- Minimum 2 years of verifiable Class A CDL driving experience.
- Clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) and no history of serious traffic violations.
- Ability to pass a DOT physical and drug screen.
- Proven ability to operate a CMV safely and efficiently.
- Strong understanding of DOT regulations, hours of service (HOS), and safety compliance.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Must own or lease a reliable, well-maintained tractor and any necessary trailer equipment.
- Proof of appropriate commercial insurance coverage.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as an owner-operator or independent contractor.
- Strong business management skills, including financial planning and record-keeping.
- Familiarity with electronic logging devices (ELDs) and transportation management software (TMS).
