Job Description

We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Instrument Repair Specialist with a strong focus on woodwind and brass instruments to join our team in Huntington Beach. The ideal candidate will have a passion for music, a keen eye for detail, and a proven ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain a wide range of band instruments. This role is crucial in ensuring our customers’ instruments are in optimal playing condition, supporting local musicians and school music programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform diagnostics, repairs, adjustments, and overhauls on woodwind and brass instruments, including but not limited to flutes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and tubas.
  • Utilize specialized tools and techniques for dent removal, soldering, key fitting, pad replacement, corking, and valve work.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in the repair shop.
  • Provide accurate estimates for repair costs and timelines to customers.
  • Document all repair work, parts used, and service performed.
  • Communicate effectively with customers regarding the status of their repairs and provide expert advice on instrument care and maintenance.
  • Assist with inventory management of repair parts and supplies.
  • Stay current with industry best practices, new repair techniques, and instrument technologies.
  • Collaborate with sales staff and educators to support customer needs and store operations.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in woodwind and brass instrument repair.
  • Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing common issues across various instrument brands and models.
  • Demonstrated expertise in soldering, dent removal, pad replacement, and mechanical adjustments.
  • Strong manual dexterity and excellent hand-eye coordination.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple repair projects simultaneously.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to high-quality craftsmanship.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for customer interaction.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Formal training or certification from an accredited instrument repair program (e.g., Red Wing, Renton, etc.).
  • Experience with specialty or vintage instruments.
  • Familiarity with various instrument brands and their specific repair nuances.
  • Prior experience working in a retail music store environment.
  • Personal experience playing a woodwind or brass instrument.
