Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated Raw Materials Chemist with a strong focus on supply chain integration to join our team in Dupont Circle, Washington D.C. This role is critical in ensuring the quality and consistency of our raw materials, from initial sourcing to final production. The ideal candidate will bridge the gap between R&D, Quality Control, and Supply Chain departments, implementing robust material specifications, conducting vendor qualifications, and optimizing our raw material procurement processes to enhance efficiency and product quality across Ashland’s diverse portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain raw material specifications in collaboration with R&D, Quality Assurance, and Supply Chain teams.
- Conduct thorough evaluations and qualifications of new and existing raw material suppliers, including on-site audits and performance monitoring.
- Perform chemical analysis and characterization of raw materials using various analytical techniques (e.g., GC-MS, HPLC, FTIR, NMR) to ensure compliance with specifications.
- Investigate and resolve raw material quality issues, non-conformances, and supplier deviations, implementing corrective and preventive actions.
- Collaborate with the supply chain to optimize raw material inventory, reduce lead times, and mitigate supply risks.
- Provide technical support to procurement teams during supplier negotiations and contract reviews.
- Stay abreast of industry trends, regulatory changes, and new raw material technologies to recommend strategic improvements.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives for raw material quality, testing methodologies, and supply chain processes.
- Prepare comprehensive reports on raw material performance, supplier quality metrics, and project status.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in raw materials chemistry, quality control, or supply chain within a manufacturing environment.
- Proven experience with analytical instrumentation (GC-MS, HPLC, FTIR, NMR) and wet chemistry techniques.
- Strong understanding of raw material specifications, quality management systems (ISO 9001), and supplier qualification processes.
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) or similar data management tools.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree or Ph.D. in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering.
- Experience in the specialty chemicals, pharmaceutical, or food ingredient industries.
- Knowledge of relevant regulatory standards (e.g., cGMP, REACH, TSCA).
- Certification in Lean Six Sigma or other process improvement methodologies.
- Familiarity with ERP systems (e.g., SAP) for supply chain and inventory management.
