Job Description

Join the Arizona Museum of Natural History as an Invertebrate Paleontology Assistant, a vital lab-based role supporting our research and collections management team. This position is perfect for an individual with a passion for ancient life, meticulous attention to detail, and a strong work ethic. You will be instrumental in the preparation, conservation, documentation, and cataloging of our extensive invertebrate fossil collection, contributing directly to scientific discovery and public education. This hands-on role involves working closely with paleontologists and collections managers within a dedicated laboratory environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare fossil specimens using various mechanical and chemical techniques.
  • Assist in the conservation and stabilization of invertebrate fossils.
  • Accurately catalog and database new and existing fossil specimens.
  • Maintain detailed records of specimen treatment and provenance.
  • Organize and manage laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Support fieldwork activities, including collection and data recording, as needed.
  • Assist in the curation and rehousing of collections according to best practices.
  • Contribute to the development of exhibits and educational materials related to invertebrate paleontology.

Required Skills

  • Basic understanding of paleontological principles and practices.
  • Experience with laboratory procedures and safety protocols.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in data entry and basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Physical dexterity for delicate specimen handling and manual preparation tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Geology, Biology, Paleontology, or a related field.
  • Experience with fossil preparation techniques (e.g., air scribes, micro-blasting).
  • Familiarity with museum collections management systems (e.g., Specify, EMu).
  • Previous experience in a museum, university, or research laboratory setting.
  • Knowledge of regional invertebrate fossil fauna.
