Job Description

Sanford Health is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Neurologic Music Therapist to join our interdisciplinary team in Sioux Falls. This specialized clinical role focuses on providing evidence-based music therapy interventions for patients with neurological injuries and diseases. The successful candidate will design and implement individualized treatment plans to address cognitive, motor, and speech deficits, enhancing patient recovery and quality of life. This position requires advanced clinical reasoning, strong communication skills, and a commitment to patient-centered care within a dynamic healthcare environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients' neurological function, musical preferences, and therapeutic needs.
  • Develop and implement individualized Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) treatment plans based on evidence-based techniques.
  • Utilize NMT techniques such as Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation (RAS), Melodic Intonation Therapy (MIT), and Therapeutic Instrumental Music Performance (TIMP) to achieve therapeutic goals.
  • Collaborate effectively with an interdisciplinary team including physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists.
  • Document patient progress, maintain accurate records, and contribute to team meetings.
  • Educate patients, families, and staff about the benefits and principles of Neurologic Music Therapy.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and maintain NMT certification.

Required Skills

  • Board Certification in Music Therapy (MT-BC) by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT).
  • Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) Fellowship training and certification from the Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Music Therapy from an AMTA-approved program.
  • Proven experience delivering NMT interventions in a clinical setting.
  • Strong understanding of neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and neurological disorders.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Music Therapy or a related field.
  • Experience with electronic health records (EHR) systems.
  • Familiarity with research methodologies in music therapy.
  • Prior experience in an acute care or rehabilitation hospital setting.
  • Bilingual proficiency.
