Job Description

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking dedicated and compassionate individuals to join our non-emergency patient transport team as Patient Transport Aides. No prior experience is required, as full comprehensive training will be provided to ensure you are confident and competent in your role. This is an excellent entry-level opportunity to start a career in healthcare, working within a supportive team to ensure patients arrive safely and comfortably at their appointments and homes.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely transport patients, including those with mobility challenges, to and from medical appointments, discharge locations, and other healthcare facilities.
- Assist patients with boarding and alighting the transport vehicle, using appropriate equipment (e.g., wheelchairs, stretchers) as required.
- Provide compassionate and patient-centered care, ensuring comfort and dignity throughout the journey.
- Maintain accurate records of patient journeys, vehicle logs, and incident reports.
- Conduct daily vehicle checks to ensure safety, cleanliness, and operational readiness.
- Communicate effectively with patients, their families, healthcare staff, and the control centre.
- Adhere to all relevant health and safety regulations, safeguarding policies, and Trust procedures.
- Handle patient information confidentially and professionally.
- Work collaboratively as part of a team to ensure efficient and timely transport services.
Required Skills
- Full UK driving license with no more than 3 penalty points (for insurance purposes).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- A compassionate and patient-focused approach.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Reliability and punctuality.
- Physical fitness to assist patients and handle equipment safely (manual handling training will be provided).
- Basic literacy and numeracy skills for record-keeping.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a customer service or care-giving role.
- Basic First Aid certification (training will be provided if not held).
- Knowledge of the local Somerset area roadways.
- Ability to remain calm and professional in challenging situations.
