Job Description
We are seeking an exceptionally talented and motivated Process Development Chemist to join our dynamic R&D team in Antioch, CA. This pivotal role focuses on the critical scale-up of novel chemical processes from laboratory to pilot plant and eventually full commercial manufacturing. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, optimizing, and implementing robust chemical processes, ensuring high yield, purity, and cost-effectiveness. This position requires a deep understanding of reaction kinetics, process safety, analytical techniques, and manufacturing best practices. You will work closely with research chemists, engineers, and production teams to bring groundbreaking products to market.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and execute experiments for process optimization and scale-up, focusing on reaction conditions, work-up procedures, and purification steps.
- Develop and validate analytical methods for in-process control and final product characterization.
- Perform root cause analysis for process deviations and implement corrective actions.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to design and commission new equipment and facilities suitable for manufacturing scale.
- Conduct thorough process hazard analyses (PHAs) and ensure all processes adhere to strict safety and environmental regulations.
- Document experimental results, process parameters, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) comprehensively.
- Mentor junior chemists and technicians, fostering a culture of scientific rigor and continuous improvement.
- Stay abreast of new technologies and methodologies in process chemistry and manufacturing.
Required Skills
- Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of industrial experience in process development, process chemistry, or manufacturing scale-up in the chemical or pharmaceutical industry.
- Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of organic synthesis, reaction mechanisms, and kinetics.
- Proficiency in analytical techniques such as HPLC, GC, NMR, MS, and calorimetry.
- Demonstrated experience in process optimization and troubleshooting.
- Understanding of statistical design of experiments (DoE).
- Excellent problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to challenges.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with continuous flow chemistry and automation.
- Knowledge of GMP/ISO regulations.
- Familiarity with process modeling and simulation software.
- Experience in leading small project teams.
- Publications or patents in process chemistry or related fields.
