Job Description
Join our team at Science Central as a Part-time Science Museum Docent with a special focus on Paleontology! We are looking for an enthusiastic and knowledgeable individual passionate about prehistoric life, fossils, and the history of Earth to engage our diverse visitors. In this role, you will bring our paleontology exhibits to life, guiding guests through fascinating discoveries and inspiring curiosity about the ancient world. This position offers flexible hours, perfect for students, retirees, or anyone seeking a rewarding part-time opportunity to share their love for science.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead engaging and interactive tours and presentations focused on paleontology exhibits, including dinosaurs, fossils, and geological history.
- Facilitate hands-on activities and demonstrations related to paleontology, adapting content for various age groups and learning styles.
- Answer visitor questions comprehensively and accurately, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for science.
- Ensure the safety and positive experience of all museum guests, maintaining a welcoming and educational atmosphere.
- Assist with the setup and breakdown of educational programs and special events as needed.
- Stay informed about current paleontological research and museum exhibits to provide up-to-date information.
- Collaborate with other museum staff to enhance the overall visitor experience.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated passion for paleontology, geology, biology, or related scientific fields.
- Excellent communication and public speaking skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and enthusiastically.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to connect with and engage diverse audiences, including children, families, and adults.
- Reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and occasional evenings.
- Physical ability to stand, walk, and engage in active presentations for extended periods.
Preferred Qualifications
- Enrollment in or completion of a degree program in paleontology, geology, biology, education, or a related field.
- Previous experience in a museum, educational institution, or public engagement role.
- Experience working with children or leading group activities.
- Basic knowledge of museum operations and visitor services.
- CPR and First Aid certification.
