Job Description

UPS is seeking a meticulous and passionate Digital Archivist with a focus on historical data to join our team. In this 100% remote role, you will be responsible for the preservation, organization, and accessibility of UPS’s extensive digital historical assets. This includes a wide array of digital formats, from scanned historical documents and photographs to born-digital records, videos, and oral histories. The successful candidate will play a critical role in safeguarding our corporate legacy, ensuring that our historical narrative is accurately captured, cataloged, and made available for research, corporate storytelling, and compliance purposes. This position requires a blend of archival expertise, technical proficiency in digital preservation tools, and a deep understanding of metadata standards and data management best practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategies for the long-term preservation of digital historical assets, including risk assessment and migration planning.
  • Catalog, describe, and process digital collections using appropriate archival principles and metadata standards (e.g., Dublin Core, MODS, EAD).
  • Manage and maintain the digital asset management system (DAMS) for historical content, ensuring data integrity and accessibility.
  • Collaborate with various internal departments to identify, ingest, and process new digital historical records.
  • Conduct quality control on digitized materials and born-digital records to ensure adherence to established standards.
  • Provide reference services and access to historical digital collections for internal stakeholders, researchers, and external inquiries.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and best practices in digital archiving and preservation.
  • Contribute to the development of policies and procedures for the acquisition, management, and use of digital historical materials.
  • Assist in the creation of digital exhibits and online resources to promote UPS's heritage.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in digital archiving, digital preservation, or records management.
  • Strong knowledge of archival theory, best practices, and metadata standards (e.g., Dublin Core, MODS, EAD).
  • Proficiency with Digital Asset Management Systems (DAMS) and archival content management systems.
  • Experience with various digital formats and conversion processes.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects in a remote environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Technical aptitude for understanding and utilizing archival software and tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Library Science, Archival Studies, Information Science, or a related field.
  • Experience with archival description software (e.g., ArchivesSpace, AtoM).
  • Familiarity with intellectual property rights and copyright as they pertain to digital content.
  • Experience in a corporate or large institutional archival setting.
  • Knowledge of scripting languages (e.g., Python) for data manipulation or automation.
  • Certification in Digital Archives Specialist (DAS) or similar.
